Okaw Veterinary Clinic welcomes you to our website!

Happy Valentine's Day from The Cookie Palace!

What's the Cookie Palace? That is the whole clinic. From the moment your pet comes in our office until they leave they will be given tasty treats from our staff (including the vet) and their loving owner to help make their visit more positive. We use only low stress techniques (no more wrestling matches) with your pet. That's why we ask you to bring your pet hungry so they want their tasty treats.

Ranger's News

February is Pet Dental Month

Your pet's teeth and mouth health is important. If your pet has tartar, bacteria will start to live in your pet's mouth around the tartar. The bacteria release toxins that irritate the gum tissue. This causes the gums to swell and be painful. The teeth may start to become loose as the toxins destroy the tissues around them. The bacteria can also enter your pet's blood stream and travel to other areas of the body, including the heart, kidneys and liver. The bacteria can damage these organs. This is why we recommend dental cleanings and other dental products.

Some tips to keep your pet's mouth healthy:

  • Brush your pet's teeth with a pet tooth brush and pet tooth paste. Don't use people tooth paste.
  • Encourage your pet to chew on rawhides, nylabones and other toys that help remove tartar.
  • Feed your pet dry food. The dry food helps remove tartar as your pet chews.
  • If you notice your pet having bad breath, dropping kibble as they eat or a snotty nose, bring them in to see us.
  • Use a water additive or cleaning rinse to help keep your pet's teeth clean.
  • Follow your veterinarian's advice on dental care, including bringing them in for a dental cleaning.

Dog Stolen from Urbana Dog Park

Yumi was stolen from the Urbana Dog Park on December 16th. She is a dark chocolate and white pit bull. Her nose is black and pink. She weighs about 50 pounds and has been microchipped. She is not wearing a collar, it came off while she was trying to escape from the man stealing her. She was adopted from the Douglas County Animal Shelter a year ago. If you have any information, please contact the Urbana Police at 217-384-2320 or call (773)-315-2460. There is a $3,500 reward for who ever returns her - no questions asked. For more information about Yumi's story, visit
WCIA and Champaign County Humane Society websites.

Winter Pet Safety

Keep your pet safe during the Holidays. Keep your pet away from:

1)
Take your pet outside for short potty breaks. Your pet can get frost bite, just like you can.

2) Use pet safe sidewalk de-icer.

3) Use pet boots to protect your pet's feet from ice and snow.

4) Keep antifreeze out of your pet's reach. Antifreeze tastes sweet and your pet may drink it and become sick.

5) If your pet lives outside, provide a warm shelter with clean dry bedding. Also provide more food. Your pet burns more calories trying to stay warm. Also provide fresh water and make sure it does not become frozen. You can purchase a heated water bowl.
