Helping your Dog to Learn to be Calm During Storms

Please follow the check off methods for your pet during storms. Remember for non-storm days to train your dog to go to the safe room, lay down and be quiet for 5 - 10 minutes to learn how to settle in a safe area.

___   DAP collar on all the time . Renew monthly. Wear it tight like a belt.

During Storms:

___   Give appropreate anti-anxiety medication at least 1 hour before weather changes.

___   Tell your dog to go to the safe area - hiding place where he or she can be calm. Perhaps a bathroom , basement or crate.

___   Give your dog a Kong toy with peanut butter (frozen) to distract.

___   Use snug fitting T-shirt or cover your pet with a loose blanket.

___   Play heavy beat rock, disco or North African (belly dance) musci at a moderate level.

___   Close the blinds, cover the crate with a blanket to decrease noise and lightening.

___   Stay calm, no excessive petting, high pitched voices or agitated action (get you and your family in a safe area early in bad storms to avoid chaos)
